What is Sceptre C248B-144RN

The Sceptre C248B-144RN is the cheapest 144Hz monitor you can buy. Don’t be fooled by its price. It comes with a number of gaming-centric features and offers good value for money. Read this review to know more about it.

Sceptre C248B-144RN - Image Quality

The Sceptre C248B-144RN is a 23.6-inch curved Full HD (1920 x 1080) Gaming monitor. It is based on the VA panel. It has a curvature of 1800R. It covers 86% of the sRGB color gamut and supports true 8-bit color depth.

Though its specs are similar to other budget monitors, its color quality in real-life conditions is good. In fact, the colors are better than most of the TN panels in the market.

Though they are not suitable for color-sensitive work like professional graphic design, they will be enough to display a wide variety of colors in movies or video games.

It has a high contrast ratio of 3000:1 thanks to its VA panel. The images are vibrant and are even better once you calibrate your monitor. It has a brightness level of 250-nits. You will have sufficient brightness to enjoy playing games and watching movies under normal room lighting.

The Sceptre C248B-144RN has a pixel density of 92 PPI. This results in sharp-looking text and images without much pixelization.

The curved screen adds depth to the images and makes gaming immersive. The high contrast levels make blacks appear darker and whites appear brighter. Overall, you will have an immersive gaming experience.

The viewing angles of this monitor are wide and comfortable. You get 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles. There won’t be a shift in color, contrast, and brightness levels when viewing the monitor from different angles.

The monitor we reviewed had no dead pixels. There was slight backlight bleeding towards the edges. It is not distracting and is only visible in dark areas.

This monitor has a matte anti-glare coating. It will help diffuse any reflections that form on it.

Sceptre C248B-144RN - Design, Ergonomics and Connectivity

The Sceptre C248B-144RN comes in an ultra-slim design. It has thin bezels. They provide minimal distractions when you use this monitor for a multi-monitor setup.

Most companies advertise their monitors are edgeless. Most consumers will be disappointed when they find bezels present on their monitors. No monitors can truly be edgeless. All those monitors will have thin bezels. Same in the case of this monitor.

The overall build quality is decent. The cabinet is made up of good quality durable plastic.

There are five buttons present on the backside of this monitor towards its right-hand side. They are responsive and help you navigate through the OSD menu. The middle button helps you turn on/off your monitor.

It has a v-shaped stand that keeps the monitor sturdy without any issues of wobbling. The stand has no ergonomics except -5°/15° tilt. You cannot adjust the height of the monitor, swivel, or rotate it using the stand.

You can wall-mount this monitor or connect it to a third-party stand using the 75x75mm VESA mount.

There are a fair number of connectivity options. They include 1x HDMI 1.4, 1x HDMI 2.0, and 1x DisplayPort 1.2. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack.

There are 2 × 2W built-in speakers in this monitor. They are not too loud. I suggest you buy external speakers for better gaming and movie-watching experience.

Sceptre C248B-144RN - Gaming Performance

The gaming performance of the Sceptre C248B-144RN is impressive.

It has a refresh rate of 144Hz. You are in for a buttery-smooth gaming experience.

This monitor also supports AMD’s FreeSync technology. This will sync the frame rates of a game with the refresh rate of the monitor to eliminate stuttering, lagging or screen tearing during video games. This monitor also works well with the Nvidia graphics cards without any problems.

It has a response time of 3ms and an input lag of around 4ms. The input lag is totally imperceptible. The 3ms is perfect for everything except competitive gaming.

In most cases, you will be able to enjoy fast-paced games and esports games without any problems but for competitive gaming, it is better to use TN panel monitors that support 1ms response times.

There are minor issues of ghosting and trailing especially in dark areas of the games. This is due to the VA panel. It is definitely tolerable and does not hinder your gaming experience.

There is also a way to minimize ghosting in games where you cannot reach 144 FPS like Control, RDR 2, etc. You can simply turn off the overdrive option in the OSD menu. This will be very much helpful in minimizing ghosting.

Sceptre C248B-144RN - Additional Features

The Sceptre C248B-144RN has a blur-light filter. You can game on it for long hours without worrying about eye strain. It is also flicker-free. You don’t have to worry about headaches if you’re sensitive to flickering.

There are different color presets like FPS, RTS, Movie, Eco, Standard, etc. that will enhance your gaming or movie watching experience.

You can also manually adjust colors, brightness levels, contrast levels, color temperature, saturation, gamma, etc.

The OSD menu is user friendly and fairly straight forward. You can access all these features through it.
